Quick answer

For most Scottish homes we fit Hanchu LiFePO4 batteries in three sizes. The right one depends on your evening electricity use, your tariff, and how much solar you generate. Larger homes and EV owners may suit the bigger unit, while smaller homes may suit the starter size. We confirm sizing at a no-obligation survey.

What is the best home battery storage system in Scotland in 2026?

For most Scottish homes, the Hanchu 9.5kWh LiFePO4 battery offers a good balance of size and capacity. It stores enough to cover evening and overnight use from daytime solar, and its 95% depth of discharge means you use nearly all the stored energy. For grid arbitrage on time-of-use tariffs, the 9.5kWh is often a good fit — large enough to shift meaningful load, small enough to cycle fully each day. Pricing is confirmed on your written quote after a no-obligation survey.

Three sizes compared

All three use the same LiFePO4 chemistry and pair with the Hanchu hybrid inverter. The difference is capacity. Each is priced at survey and confirmed on your written quote.

Why LiFePO4 and not lithium-ion?

LiFePO4 (lithium iron phosphate) is the current standard for home batteries. Compared to older lithium-ion NMC chemistries:

  • + Longer cycle life: manufacturer-rated at around 8,000 cycles
  • + Safer: no thermal runaway risk under normal conditions
  • + Deep discharge: 95% depth of discharge on the Hanchu range
  • - Slightly lower energy density (heavier for same kWh — not an issue for a wall-mounted unit)

Which size should you choose?

5kWh — starter or retrofit

Best for: 1–2 bed flats, low evening consumption, or adding battery to an existing solar system. Stores enough for lights, appliances, and small loads from sunset to bedtime. Limited grid arbitrage benefit — the spread is small on a single cycle.

9.5kWh — the sweet spot

Best for: 3-bed houses, families, anyone on a time-of-use tariff. Large enough to shift meaningful overnight charge to peak hours. Covers most evening + morning consumption from stored solar.

13.5kWh — for larger homes

Best for: 4+ bed homes, EV owners who charge at home, anyone who wants to rely less on the grid. Can store a full day's generation in summer and provide meaningful overnight backup, with a larger arbitrage window.

Grid arbitrage: how it works

On a time-of-use tariff, a battery can also charge from the grid when electricity is cheaper. The idea is simple:

  • Charge overnight: at your tariff's cheaper off-peak rate
  • Discharge at peak: avoid importing at your tariff's peak rate
  • Losses: some energy is always lost in the round trip, so the price gap needs to be wide enough to be worthwhile

Whether this suits you depends on your tariff and usage. See is a solar battery worth it in Scotland? for what to consider.
