- Local Scottish office in Dundee
Quick answer
A home battery stores electricity from your solar panels, or from the grid on a cheaper off-peak tariff, so you can use it in the evening. We size your battery after a survey and confirm it on a written, no-obligation quote. We install through MCS-certified partners. Interest-free credit up to £30,000, subject to status. Is a home battery worth it in Scotland?
It depends on how and when you use electricity. A battery can help in two ways: storing daytime solar for the evening, and, on a suitable time-of-use tariff, charging on cheaper overnight electricity to use at peak times (grid arbitrage). Your survey looks at your usage and tariff, and everything is confirmed on your written, no-obligation quote.

Battery sizes and pricing
| Capacity | Best for | Price |
|---|---|---|
| 5kWh | 4kWp solar, small home | Priced at survey |
| 9.5kWh | Most Scottish homes | Priced at survey |
| 13.5kWh | Large home, whole-home backup | Priced at survey |
Every battery system is priced at survey. What moves the price up: a longer cable run, a three-phase supply, or a backup gateway for whole-home protection. Your survey gives your exact figure.
How a battery adds value — the model
The value of a stored kWh is the import it avoids — not the export rate. A battery benefits you in three ways:
A. Solar self-consumption
kWh stored from solar surplus x round-trip efficiency (0.88) x your import rate, minus the export payment you forgo.
B. Grid arbitrage
kWh delivered at your peak rate minus kWh drawn at your off-peak rate divided by round-trip efficiency. It only applies on a tariff with a peak/off-peak spread.
C. Surplus export
Any surplus after the battery is full goes to the grid. Smart Export Guarantee payments, with rates set by each supplier.
This explains how value is made up; it is not a forecast. Your survey looks at your own usage and tariff.

All figures illustrative. Model: one full battery cycle per day at 95% depth of discharge, round-trip losses applied, with gradual capacity fade over time. This tool shows energy only. It does not estimate costs or bill changes; any cost figures are confirmed on your written, no-obligation quote after a survey.
When a battery is NOT worth it
A battery is a poor investment if any of these apply to you:
- x Your evening electricity consumption is very low. The battery has little to discharge into.
- x You are on a flat-rate tariff with no cheap overnight window. Grid arbitrage needs a peak/off-peak spread to work.
- x Your roof needs replacing in the next few years. Get the roof done first — removing and refitting panels costs money.
- x You plan to move within a few years. You may recover some value in the property price, but not all of it.
Your survey confirms what suits your home — including whether a battery makes sense at all.

What MCS actually means — and why it matters
MCS stands for Microgeneration Certification Scheme. It is the UK quality mark for renewable energy installations — solar, battery, heat pumps. An MCS-certified installer must follow defined standards for design, installation, and commissioning.
Why it matters to you: without an MCS certificate, you generally cannot receive Smart Export Guarantee payments for the electricity you send to the grid. The certificate is not optional — it is required.
Who carries out the installation
We install through MCS-certified partners.
The elephant in the room: the insulation scandal
The UK insulation industry saw widespread failures — cavity wall insulation fitted badly, by under-skilled workers, often subcontracted to uncertified people. Homeowners were left with damp, mould, and no recourse. It happened because there was no enforceable quality standard and no register of who actually did the work.
What protects you here: MCS certification means the installer is named, registered, and audited. Warranty and guarantee terms are confirmed in writing on your quotation.

Common questions
Yes. We arrange surveys and installations across Scotland through our MCS-certified installation partners. Enter your postcode on the quote form or call 0141 230 0198 and we will confirm coverage for your address.
Usually, yes. Most existing solar systems can take a battery, either through a hybrid inverter or a separate battery inverter. Our surveyor checks your current inverter, wiring and space, then sets out the options on your written quote.
Interest-free credit up to £30,000, subject to status. Ask about spreading the cost when you request your quote, and the options will be set out clearly before you commit to anything.
Call 0141 230 0198 or fill in the quote form. We arrange a survey of your home, then send a written, no-obligation quote with the system, price and warranty terms confirmed in writing.
