Scottish Solar Index

The Scottish Solar Index

What solar panels actually produce in Scotland — measured from real systems, not modelled. The first edition publishes when the sample is large enough to mean something.

  • Installed through our MCS-certified partners
  • Interest-free credit up to £30,000, subject to status
  • Local Scottish office in Dundee

Quick answer

The Scottish Solar Index will report what monitored solar systems in Scotland actually generate, by region and roof orientation. No figures are published yet; the first edition appears only when the sample is large enough to be meaningful. For your own home, ask for a survey and a written, no-obligation quote on 0141 230 0198.

Why this exists

Most solar estimates rely on modelled yield. It is much harder to find what real Scottish roofs produce, by region, orientation and system size, from monitored systems. The Scottish Solar Index aims to help with first-party data from the Solar Care Club's monitoring tier. See our solar panels page for how generation is estimated at survey today.

The method

Data is collected from Solar Care Club member systems with consent. For each system we record:

  • System size (kWp)
  • Roof orientation (south, southeast, southwest, east, west)
  • Region (council area)
  • Daily generation (kWh) from the inverter's monitoring
  • System age (years)

We publish annual generation per kWp, broken down by region and orientation, with the sample size (n) stated for every figure. We never publish a figure the sample does not support.

When the first edition publishes

The first edition of the Scottish Solar Index will publish when we have monitored data from at least 50 systems across at least three Scottish regions, covering at least two orientations. An honest empty index dated today beats a fabricated full one. We are collecting now.

Contribute your data

If you have a solar system in Scotland with monitoring, you can contribute your generation data to the Index. Join the Solar Care Club Watch tier and opt in to data sharing. Your data is anonymised — we publish regional aggregates, never individual system data.

Limitations

  • The sample is self-selecting — Solar Care Club members only.
  • Shading, pitch, and inverter efficiency vary between systems and are not controlled for.
  • Weather variation between years means annual figures should not be treated as predictions.
  • The sample size is stated for every figure. Small samples carry wide confidence intervals.
